Now Supreme Court has accused Govt. for Post Pole Violence – from Court Officials
The Supreme Court formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the matter and scheduled a hearing for the week of June 7.
The SC on Tuesday asked the Centre and the West Bengal government to reply to a petition seeking orders to stop an alleged exodus due to "state-sponsored" violence following the assembly elections by forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the matter and take punishment against those responsible.
After the petitioners stated that they had taken note of the situation in West Bengal, a vacation bench of Justices Vineet Saran and B R Gavai directed that the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the National Commission of Women (NCW) become parties to the case.
The Supreme Court ordered that the Centre's and West Bengal's responses be filed in the case and that the plea be heard again in the week beginning June 7.
Senior attorney Pinky Anand, standing for petitioners who are social workers, attorneys, and victims of alleged post-poll violence, stated more than one lakh people had been displaced due to post-poll violence in the state during the brief session conducted via video conferencing.
Many commissions, she said, including the NHRC and the NCW, have taken notice of the situation in the state and have been declared parties to the lawsuit.
The bench directed Anand to apply the matter during the day and allowed the commissions to become parties to the case.
Anand also suggested that interim relief be provided because individuals in camps require rehabilitation. "Nothing happened, ex-parte," the bench said. We need to hear from the other parties. Allow them to file their responses."
After Anand requested an urgent listing, the Supreme Court agreed to hear the case on May 21.
According to the PIL filed by social worker Arun Mukherjee and others, they have been aggrieved by the post-election violence in West Bengal since May 2.
The police and state-sponsored goons are in cahoots, according to the appeal. As a result, the police are merely spectators in the entire scenario, discouraging and threatening victims from filing FIRs.
According to the report, there was also no investigation of cases, inaction in circumstances where cognizable offenses were committed in the presence of police authorities, and no provision of security to persons facing life-threatening situations.
According to the report, several media outlets, including social media, print, and electronic, have covered the full trail of incidences. Various government agencies and autonomous institutions, such as the NHRC and NCW, have either taken awareness of the situation on their own or responded to complaints from hapless victims and have dispatched teams to investigate the situation.
"The State Government provided little assistance or support, and their security was frequently jeopardized. They have reported the police's negligence in providing safety to women who have been assaulted and threatened by hooligans. No action has been done by police officials in this regard," according to the petition.
